WRITTEN BY DEBBIE MCKEEGAN FESPA TEXTILE AMBASSADOR
The Interior Décor sector offers a marketplace primed for digital disruption. As a sector valued at $737.20 billion (retail) it offers infinite opportunity for new entrepreneurial business and convergence.
As a market, its legacy production is based on stock – but the marketplace has changed. Trade clients and retail consumers demand personalized, customized products. These market shifts and the application of digital technologies offer a new chapter for the Industry.
To explore we brought together three industry experts from across the sectors in partnership with digital technology provider EFI (more from Tomer Ohavi of EFI later). Presenting two case Studies are Ross Haxton of Glimmer and Annette Taylor Anderson of ATA Designs, each of these presentations will be published independently.
The session was hosted by Debbie McKeegan - Fespa Textile Ambassador and in this one hour talk we discussed the creative applications, commercial opportunities, the application of digital technology, décor market analysis, industry trends and more…here is a summary my introduction:
Smithers research forecasts that the decor marketplace is going to grow by approximately 5% annually, moving up towards 2023. But the most important keynote here for you is that inkjet is the fastest growing process increasing by 30.8%. In the next two years, there is huge, huge growth available in this market sector. To give some insight – the sector encompasses: wallcoverings, bathroom textiles, home accessories, flooring, lighting, kitchen and dining, textiles, wood, laminate, tiles, rugs, carpets, drapes, beds, textiles, furniture. The marketplace is diverse and complicated, the opportunities are immense. And the great thing is, is that we now have a digital technology that can literally custom print onto any of those surfaces - no surface is safe from digital disruption - we can print onto almost anything. And as such, that presents the marketplace with incredible opportunities. Textiles and furniture have been the predominantly largest market sectors. In a market worth $700 billion, there is plenty of room for new entrepreneurial activities.
The Digital Wallcoverings sector was predicted by 2020 to be worth $2.9 billion, and that's just digital printing in the wallpaper market space, growing at a compound annual growth rate of 21.1% - moving out to $7.5 billion in the next four years.
And from the digital textile perspective, last year figures are slightly reduced because of course, we had a global crisis. The pandemic knocked about $250 million off the growth figures, but it will catch up quick. It's currently $2.2 billion, moving to $8.8 billion by 2027 with a CAGR of 19.1% (Allied Market Research).
So, what's driving change?
We, all want something eclectic, and we all want something very, very fast. Our homes are becoming an extension of our inner selves. Our homes have become aspirational. Consumers want to have the latest highest tech and create customized interiors, personalized to match their own style. Lifestyle branding – domestic and commercial - is an exploding marketplace, whether that is for the retail brands, or for Hospitality brands, all of which enables the consumer to create their own unique look.
Sustainability within the Décor sector is becoming increasingly important.
Choosing sustainable technologies, substrates (whether they're textiles or hard surfaces) is a growing requirement and must not be ignored.
Global affluence is also driving change.
The growth of the world’s population will soon reach 9 billion and the next factor driving change is urbanization. 55% of the world's population now live-in urban environments, all of these factors are driving growth. But where are most of the sales being made? Asia Pacific where affluence is rising and, of course, the European marketplace, too, which is also where all the waste is created, building mountains of landfill.
As digital technology has evolved over the last five to 10 years, its application and disruptive consequences are beginning to make a green impact within the Interior Industry.
Sustainable process, and the use of sustainable technologies is becoming more and more of a driver for the future. And also, as transparency within the supply chain gains prominence - clients are going to ask for environmental certification. “How was this printed?” they're going to ask – “are those inks certified?”. All of these things are becoming incredibly important and need to be part of the recipe of any successful print company.
Moving forward, when considering a move into the décor sector it’s important to study and to achieve commercial product specifications, you have to watch out for lightfastness, wash fastness, wet rub, dry rub, Martindale abrasion. In the UK’s domestic market marketplace, that's 30,000, for contract 90,000 and hard surface abrasion 50,000, it’s important to look into your own specific marketplace, wherever that is across the globe, because these specifications do change.
New disruptive technologies, wow, we have so much coming forward, to look forward to when we can finally get together at the Fespa Global Expo in Amsterdam in October 2021.
In wallcoverings, everything's becoming much more textual. EFI - UV printing and the use of gels to build texture offers a myriad of creative opportunities. Latex inks also offer new dimensional print effects to be explored. And you see incredible 3D results with the Dimense wallcovering machines. So, lots and lots and lots of innovations going on stream for wallcoverings, whether that is a low volume, or at high speed, the same for textiles, and the same for hard surfaces.
We look forward to watching how the design Industry will push the creative boundaries with all these new technologies in 2021.
Trending in materials, lots and lots of eco textiles coming through, which are of great importance.
And I do encourage you to start sourcing those now and find your key partners whilst also checking their credibility, alongside their certification. Building a strong database now using new circular bases, recycled polyester amongst others, will enable you to offer printed products that are designed to be sustainable. The ability to offer products that are designed for a circular economy is valuable research now for commercial success in the future. Biomaterials - the introduction of new polyesters and new cellulose-based fabrics that actually perform like polyesters are entering the marketplace at great speed as demand grows. Look out for those.
There's so much going on in this fast-paced digital marketplace.
We are seeing a massive explosion in micro designer brands (more from ATA Designs on that later) and an accelerated huge rise in ecommerce. Lifestyle branding, supply chain management, and a huge growth as we all know, for print on demand because it's sustainable, and it reduces the need for stock.
We are seeing incredible innovations in Décor using wide format technologies. And this is where there's this huge crossover from the signage industry. These machines are printing out to three meters or five meters and are now utilized to print vast stretch ceilings and decorative wraps for residential and commercial buildings. All of these applications are being used more and more in Hospitality and Retail interiors (more on that later from Ross Haxton of Glimma).
The list goes on and on and on. The incredible creativity in our sector is now pushing through into the décor market, and in doing so, we can explore new commercial opportunities and offer new products to our clients.
The story of what happens when young designers access digital technology is still being written.
What once was a theoretical sustainability goal seems to have shifted into an active regulatory reality.
Is the Textile Market Finally Recovering?
After a difficult few years, there are genuine reasons for optimism. Duncan was candid about the challenges: "The market for textiles has been very difficult over the last three years. I'm not going to hide the truth there. But the tide is turning.“
A profound shift is currently reshaping the sector
Changing consumer expectations demand greater design diversity, faster turnaround times, and sustainable manufacturing practices.
To thrive, interior brands must adapt their supply chains, bringing production closer to the end consumer and moving away from bulk manufacturing.
Digital textile printing offers a definitive solution to these operational bottlenecks.
Digital transformation doesn't announce itself.
It accumulates - one innovation at a time - until an entire industry looks back and realises the ground has shifted beneath its feet. That's precisely where textiles stands today.
The conversations happening now about AI, automation, sustainability, and digital product passports are not theoretical. They are shaping decisions being made on factory floors and in boardrooms right now.
“By leveraging advanced digital textile printing, Marylene Madou has successfully merged traditional craftsmanship with cutting-edge technology. Her approach offers a blueprint for how independent designers can scale their brands globally while maintaining a minimal environmental footprint.”
From Helsinki's printing mill to Paris's Le Marais, discover how Marimekko is scaling a design-led brand with purpose, craft, and bold innovation.
But what makes Marimekko's story compelling is not just its aesthetic legacy?
The textile industry is undergoing a vital transformation. As the insights from Techtextil and Texprocess reveal, the path forward relies on a combination of sustainable hardware, intelligent chemistry, and seamless digital workflows.
From Zimmer's industrial-scale energy reductions and Stratasys's on-demand 3D embellishments, to Kornit's single-step technical printing and the unified digital ecosystems of NedGraphics and Optitex, the tools for change are here. To stay competitive, brands and manufacturers must adopt these innovations, moving away from fragmented, wasteful processes towards a truly connected, circular economy.
Friedmans stands as a testament to the power of combining traditional textile knowledge with forward-thinking innovation.
“Operating from their UK headquarters, Friedmans now serves a diverse array of sectors, including swimwear, dance, entertainment, sportswear, interior decor, prosthetics, and even pet apparel. With a strategic supply chain that reliably serves clients worldwide”
The apparel decoration industry is decisively moving away from isolated, analogue production tools toward connected digital manufacturing environments.
"Kornit’s unwavering commitment to transformative technology continues to disrupt the status quo. For business leaders and innovators ready to capture the future of apparel manufacturing, the path forward is clear”
The Urgent Need for Sustainability at Scale
The transformation at Coats provides a vital blueprint for the wider textile and apparel sector. True sustainability cannot be achieved in silos. As Dearing emphasised:
“Cross-industry collaboration is the engine of meaningful change. Brands, machinery suppliers, chemical providers, and fibre producers must act as an interconnected ecosystem”
Today’s customers demand superior product quality, real-time data visibility, and lightning-fast turnaround times.
For large-scale garment decorators, managing these expectations while balancing seasonal demand fluctuations - such as the massive surges seen during Black Friday - presents a monumental challenge.
"Relying on transactional vendor relationships and outdated legacy equipment is no longer sufficient to secure long-term stability and growth.”
Printing method is never a secondary detail. It shapes the entire life cycle of a product, from concept to customer. In today’s fashion industry, where margins are tighter and speed matters more than ever, technical knowledge has become a competitive advantage.
“The future of textile design belongs to professionals who can combine creativity with execution, aesthetics with practicality, and vision with production reality”.
Are we witnessing the reinvention of Merch driven by adaptive, digital technologies?
The commercial opportunity presented by printed, personalised merchandise is already a lucrative revenue stream; it is the core driver of growth in a multi-billion-pound industry. And the mandate for print businesses is clear: automate, adapt, and offer undeniable added value, or choose to gradually lose market share.
Powderless DTF is an important area of innovation. It deserves research, investment, and thoughtful development.
“But at its current stage, it often feels like the industry is attempting to commercialize the concept ahead of the underlying chemistry and system readiness”.
All Apparel Manufacturers face an Urgent Mandate: “Automate or be Left Behind”.
Industry leaders like Super Nova Sports and Ryozo International were struggling with severe pre-press bottlenecks and unsustainable fabric waste. By integrating AI Sublimation Software into their workflows, these forward-thinking businesses eliminated manual variable data entry, boosted fabric efficiency to over 80%, and reduced delivery times by more than half, establishing a highly profitable, agile, and environmentally responsible production model.
The Future of Manufacturing belongs to those who Embrace Connected Digital Ecosystems
“Whether you produce garments, car interiors, or home furnishings, the transition from creative concept to production-ready product often remains fragmented. Design teams work tirelessly to develop compelling materials, yet technical teams struggle to interpret these visions without losing data along the way.”
The European digital wallcovering marketplace is expanding at an impressive rate.
“For print professionals and interior designers, this transition presents a distinct set of challenges. Achieving flawless colour consistency, managing complex substrates, and meeting stringent environmental standards are no longer optional extras; they are fundamental requirements for commercial success.”
If you're looking to optimize your website for AI search, hang onto your cowboy hat. It's the Wild West out there. Former (and current) SEO companies see the handwriting on the wall as more search moves from traditional SEO to AEO (answer engine optimisation). Opportunists are popping out of the woodwork.
(There are good options out there, but vet them carefully.)
A swimsuit might start life as a sketch. By the time it reaches the shop floor, dozens of hands have touched it - designers, dye houses, printers, trim manufacturers, quality controllers. Each one interprets colour in their own way, under their own conditions, with their own tools. The result is often a product that looks nothing like the original vision.
