Heimtextil 2027 To Launch Functional Futures Lab ─ Spotlighting Next-Generation Interior Materials

Frankfurt am Main, Germany – 27 October 2026 – Heimtextil, the international trade fair for home and contract textiles, has announced the launch of the Functional Futures Lab, a new showcase curated in partnership with Future Fabrics Expo.

Taking place from 12 to 15 January 2027 in Hall 4.1, the exhibition will spotlight materials engineered to meet the evolving functional demands of architecture, interior design and hospitality, from thermal regulation to flame resistance and durability.

The Functional Futures Lab will present both visionary prototypes and commercially available solutions, with each exhibit's stage of development made transparent through Technology Readiness Levels.

This approach is designed to help trade visitors assess potential at an early stage, offering clear guidance for material selection, product development and long-term planning.

Three colour-coded thematic areas will structure the showcase: Circular Systems, Living Nature and Natural Performance.

These categories group exhibits by material origin, processing method and conceptual approach, with particular attention to temperature responsiveness, durability, flame resistance and antibacterial properties.

Circularity and sustainability criteria will underpin the selection of all featured materials, which range from upholstery made with untreated wool fibres and living root systems offering flame protection without toxic chemicals, to durable bio-based composites and dyes derived from food waste.

Olaf Schmidt, Vice President Textiles & Textile Technologies at Messe Frankfurt, underscored the urgency of the initiative. "Performance is a key topic for the future of the textile industry. We see this worldwide at our events, from apparel to home and contract textiles. Together with Future Fabrics Expo, we showcase at Heimtextil what innovative materials will be capable of in the future. The Functional Futures Lab connects early-stage developments with solutions that are already available and highlights new potential applications for architecture, interior design and hospitality."

Amanda Johnston, Chief Design Officer at Future Fabrics Expo, added: "We are delighted to partner with Heimtextil January 2027 to elevate the conversation around the future of home and interior textiles. This partnership will connect inspiration with actionable solutions and help shape a future-focused, forward-looking, responsible industry."

Positioned as the centrepiece of Interior.Architecture.Hospitality, the Functional Futures Lab will combine material innovation with knowledge exchange.

A dedicated Talk Spot will host expert sessions, while an adjoining café will provide space for informal conversation and networking, alongside guided tours through the exhibition.

Heimtextil 2027 takes place from 12 to 15 January 2027 in Frankfurt am Main.
