ONE YEAR ON AND THE NEW EFI-REGGIANI INNOVATION CENTRE MARKS A NEW CHAPTER FOR DIGITAL TEXTILE DEVELOPMENT
“In November 2023, we were invited to visit the new site, where machines are built, tested and demonstrated in a state-of-the-art building (twice the size of the previous demo centre) that hosts the full suite of EFI Reggiani digital textile printing machinery, where the Vogue, Power, Blade, Colors, Hyper, ecoTERRA and the new Bolt XS machinery are all on display, side by side, in a vast, 3,000-square-metre demonstration centre. ” FESPA Textile Ambassador
WRITTEN BY FESPA TEXTILE AMBASSADOR DEBBIE MCKEEGAN
In July 2022 EFI™ Reggiani, the industrial textile printing business of printing technology company Electronics For Imaging Inc. (EFI), announced their plans to build a new textile campus to accommodate ongoing growth.
Exactly on-year-on in July 2023 the new 20,000-square-meter campus in Comun Nuovo, Bergamo, Italy was completed, marking a new chapter for the company and its employees.
In November 2023, we were invited to visit the new site, where machines are built, tested and demonstrated in a state-of-the-art building (twice the size of the previous demo centre) that hosts the full suite of EFI Reggiani digital textile printing machinery, where the Vogue, Power, Blade, Colors, Hyper, ecoTERRA and the new Bolt XS machinery are all on display, side by side, in a vast, 3,000-square-metre demonstration centre. Sales, marketing, application specialists, VIP guests and customers mingled for a day to network and celebrate the launch and to experience the full scope and the development of their textile printing technology.
Sustainability and efficiency is at the core of all EFI development projects, as reflected in the new buildings design, which mirrors the R&D and continued innovation of EFI Reggiani textile printing systems.
“The building is powered by 400 kilowatts of solar panels supplying 60 percent of the facility’s total energy requirements and benefits from superior thermal insulation that ensures a reduction in heating and cooling costs. Numerous skylights in the facility provide better natural lighting and a reduction in artificial lighting usage.” Green space on the campus was a priority in the design process, covering an estimated 20 percent of the total area. For a more welcoming work environment, the campus also features a canteen and gymnasium for employee use.
Environmental Innovation, Research and Development
“Since the launch of its first analogue printer, to its newest digital solutions, EFI Reggiani has at its core a heritage and expertise that have contributed to the transformation of the textile industry worldwide. With its total commitment to providing “Innovation in Green,” EFI Reggiani’s leadership is the result of extensive research targeted at improving productivity, quality and sustainability in its customers’ operations. Building on Reggiani’s 75+ year legacy, the company is focused on optimising the textile manufacturing process — and reducing energy use, water consumption and overall environmental impact — to ensure customers’ business growth and profitability”.
The Innovation centre and the machinery on-site is a testament to this statement.
A recent addition to the portfolio, the EFI Reggiani ecoTERRA machine continues to disrupt analogue production. Environmental efficiency is at its core. With a small footprint this machine delivers an extremely efficient solution for industrial scale production supported by high-tech design, on-board workflow, environmental efficiency, alongside analytics and data capture. Supported by a suite of ink options, the ecoTERRA offers (and highlights) the redesign of textile production.
Speaking of the ecoTerra Micol Gamba commented:
“The EFI Reggiani ecoTERRA is the all-in-one solution for pigment printing that requires no ancillary equipment for pre- and post-treatment. The solution gives customers competitive advantages by dramatically cutting energy and water consumption of the overall process for a more sustainable direct-to-fabric printing experience. Eco-friendly design, and water-based ink delivers excellent wet and dry fastness properties, remarkable sharpness in detail and extraordinarily high durability while also yielding longer printhead life with reduced maintenance costs. Thanks to our enhanced polymerisation and finishing unit, EFI Reggiani ecoTERRA also provides the fabric softer hand feel.”
Alongside high-quality output, efficiency and environmental print process - capturing and providing analytical print data is also an important function of print as companies not only strive to improve environmental efficiency, but also increasingly must provide this data as part of governmental legislation over the years ahead.
EFI continue to invest and develop this attribute of their technology.
Over the years, EFI Reggiani’s product portfolio has continued to expand, ranging from rotary and flatbed printing machines to scanning/multi-pass digital printers, to the world’s fastest digital textile printer — the award-winning EFI Reggiani BOLT single-pass inkjet printer that operates at 90 meters per minute. The redesign of this machine, the much-anticipated BOLT XS, will be available for purchase in 2024, with a reduced footprint and improved efficiency. Once again, this machine signposts the simplification and the reduced scale of a new generation of high-speed machinery, built for a new era of environmental production. Also worthy of note and equally leading-edge, is the EFI Reggiani HYPER, a model that can output up to 20 linear metres per minute at peak speed.
The visit also included a customer site visit. Cotonificio Zambaiti a manufacturer of printed Bedlinen, Homewares and Apparel.
Now running two state-of-the-art wide width (3m) EFI Reggiani printing machines for homeware (one using pigment inks and the other reactive) alongside analogue production. The company was founded in 1948 and they have a long legacy, a wealth of experience within vertical textile production and a highly regarded reputation. Their first step into digital technology began in 2004. Digital technologies and the environmental efficiency they deliver continue to be integral to the future development of the business.
Speaking at the event, Micol Gamba, Senior Manager of Product Marketing commented on the importance of bringing the print community together
“The visit offers a window of opportunity for both EFI Reggiani and our customers - who can together - share knowledge and insights whilst networking with fellow peers in a focussed environment. It’s a forum for innovation and expertise and an important experience for all that participate”.
Print is no longer defined by the inefficiencies that once characterised it…as advances in production processes and technology have significantly improved its environmental performance.
Taran Rai, Corporate Sustainability Manager at Epson explains why?
The story of what happens when young designers access digital technology is still being written.
What once was a theoretical sustainability goal seems to have shifted into an active regulatory reality.
Is the Textile Market Finally Recovering?
After a difficult few years, there are genuine reasons for optimism. Duncan was candid about the challenges: "The market for textiles has been very difficult over the last three years. I'm not going to hide the truth there. But the tide is turning.“
A profound shift is currently reshaping the sector
Changing consumer expectations demand greater design diversity, faster turnaround times, and sustainable manufacturing practices.
To thrive, interior brands must adapt their supply chains, bringing production closer to the end consumer and moving away from bulk manufacturing.
Digital textile printing offers a definitive solution to these operational bottlenecks.
Digital transformation doesn't announce itself.
It accumulates - one innovation at a time - until an entire industry looks back and realises the ground has shifted beneath its feet. That's precisely where textiles stands today.
The conversations happening now about AI, automation, sustainability, and digital product passports are not theoretical. They are shaping decisions being made on factory floors and in boardrooms right now.
“By leveraging advanced digital textile printing, Marylene Madou has successfully merged traditional craftsmanship with cutting-edge technology. Her approach offers a blueprint for how independent designers can scale their brands globally while maintaining a minimal environmental footprint.”
From Helsinki's printing mill to Paris's Le Marais, discover how Marimekko is scaling a design-led brand with purpose, craft, and bold innovation.
But what makes Marimekko's story compelling is not just its aesthetic legacy?
The textile industry is undergoing a vital transformation. As the insights from Techtextil and Texprocess reveal, the path forward relies on a combination of sustainable hardware, intelligent chemistry, and seamless digital workflows.
From Zimmer's industrial-scale energy reductions and Stratasys's on-demand 3D embellishments, to Kornit's single-step technical printing and the unified digital ecosystems of NedGraphics and Optitex, the tools for change are here. To stay competitive, brands and manufacturers must adopt these innovations, moving away from fragmented, wasteful processes towards a truly connected, circular economy.
Friedmans stands as a testament to the power of combining traditional textile knowledge with forward-thinking innovation.
“Operating from their UK headquarters, Friedmans now serves a diverse array of sectors, including swimwear, dance, entertainment, sportswear, interior decor, prosthetics, and even pet apparel. With a strategic supply chain that reliably serves clients worldwide”
The apparel decoration industry is decisively moving away from isolated, analogue production tools toward connected digital manufacturing environments.
"Kornit’s unwavering commitment to transformative technology continues to disrupt the status quo. For business leaders and innovators ready to capture the future of apparel manufacturing, the path forward is clear”
The Urgent Need for Sustainability at Scale
The transformation at Coats provides a vital blueprint for the wider textile and apparel sector. True sustainability cannot be achieved in silos. As Dearing emphasised:
“Cross-industry collaboration is the engine of meaningful change. Brands, machinery suppliers, chemical providers, and fibre producers must act as an interconnected ecosystem”
Today’s customers demand superior product quality, real-time data visibility, and lightning-fast turnaround times.
For large-scale garment decorators, managing these expectations while balancing seasonal demand fluctuations - such as the massive surges seen during Black Friday - presents a monumental challenge.
"Relying on transactional vendor relationships and outdated legacy equipment is no longer sufficient to secure long-term stability and growth.”
Printing method is never a secondary detail. It shapes the entire life cycle of a product, from concept to customer. In today’s fashion industry, where margins are tighter and speed matters more than ever, technical knowledge has become a competitive advantage.
“The future of textile design belongs to professionals who can combine creativity with execution, aesthetics with practicality, and vision with production reality”.
Are we witnessing the reinvention of Merch driven by adaptive, digital technologies?
The commercial opportunity presented by printed, personalised merchandise is already a lucrative revenue stream; it is the core driver of growth in a multi-billion-pound industry. And the mandate for print businesses is clear: automate, adapt, and offer undeniable added value, or choose to gradually lose market share.
Powderless DTF is an important area of innovation. It deserves research, investment, and thoughtful development.
“But at its current stage, it often feels like the industry is attempting to commercialize the concept ahead of the underlying chemistry and system readiness”.
All Apparel Manufacturers face an Urgent Mandate: “Automate or be Left Behind”.
Industry leaders like Super Nova Sports and Ryozo International were struggling with severe pre-press bottlenecks and unsustainable fabric waste. By integrating AI Sublimation Software into their workflows, these forward-thinking businesses eliminated manual variable data entry, boosted fabric efficiency to over 80%, and reduced delivery times by more than half, establishing a highly profitable, agile, and environmentally responsible production model.
The Future of Manufacturing belongs to those who Embrace Connected Digital Ecosystems
“Whether you produce garments, car interiors, or home furnishings, the transition from creative concept to production-ready product often remains fragmented. Design teams work tirelessly to develop compelling materials, yet technical teams struggle to interpret these visions without losing data along the way.”
The European digital wallcovering marketplace is expanding at an impressive rate.
“For print professionals and interior designers, this transition presents a distinct set of challenges. Achieving flawless colour consistency, managing complex substrates, and meeting stringent environmental standards are no longer optional extras; they are fundamental requirements for commercial success.”
If you're looking to optimize your website for AI search, hang onto your cowboy hat. It's the Wild West out there. Former (and current) SEO companies see the handwriting on the wall as more search moves from traditional SEO to AEO (answer engine optimisation). Opportunists are popping out of the woodwork.
(There are good options out there, but vet them carefully.)
A swimsuit might start life as a sketch. By the time it reaches the shop floor, dozens of hands have touched it - designers, dye houses, printers, trim manufacturers, quality controllers. Each one interprets colour in their own way, under their own conditions, with their own tools. The result is often a product that looks nothing like the original vision.
