Key Takeaways:

Consumers are becoming increasingly aware of sustainability;

at the same time, they want to be inspired. They want to make the right choices and rely heavily on their chosen brands to deliver responsible products. Whilst Covid has challenged the retail industry – consumers value responsible, sustainable brands - and these businesses are flourishing.

The Ten principles of circularity – and their key attributes:

Material Choices

Start to consider what materials will be used, where they will be used within the process and the environmental impact that they may have.

Cyclability -

This will really determine how the materials you choose will fare in the future. Can they either be reused, returned or recycled? If you select the wrong material at the beginning, maybe because it was a cheaper product. You will have created an issue for the future.

Waste Avoidance

Look at what you're creating and control the waste during your manufacturing or print processes. Optimise waste avoidance, you'll save money, and you will increase your profitability.

Disassembly

Focus on the products disassembly at the end of life. Make sure that the products you create are intelligently designed, so you can disassemble them at the end of their life.

Green Chemistry

within the print industry, you need to make sure that you reduce the use of hazardous products, reduced VOCs. Make conscious choices, choose sustainable technologies and transition to designing for circularity.

Refurbishment

Take responsibility of a products end of life, does it have to be thrown away? Or can we just replace an element of it? Can we print something different that just clips to it? Refurbishment really is the area where people are focusing on now instead of simply replacing.

Durability

How long are products going to be in store or how long are we going to use? Is it one week one month? Is it three months? Is it three years because this will really determine the materials that you choose to use and how you can design circularity into your thinking?

Versatility -

Start to look at the versatility of the materials that you are using. Make sure that you can react the needs of not just the market, but your customers and their customers as well.

Circularity -

Don't do undo all of your hard work. “Where you've created amazing print products on products. Really start to think about how the customer will open your products and go oh wow! - All of it 100% recyclable”.

New Models

Look at new models. Have conversations with your clients around take back schemes, recycling schemes. Create closed loop solutions.
