The Bezos Earth Fund Announces $34 Million to Revolutionise Sustainable Fashion Materials
Washington DC - 24 April 2026 – The Bezos Earth Fund has announced a $34 million commitment to advance breakthrough sustainable materials for the global fashion and textile industry.
Working with leading scientists across the United States, these new grants aim to reinvent the fabrics used in everyday clothing, focusing on next-generation materials that replicate the feel of rayon, silk, and cotton while drastically improving upon the environmental impact of conventional manufacturing.
The materials and manufacturing processes behind modern fabrics are responsible for approximately 80 percent of the industry’s environmental footprint, contributing heavily to greenhouse gas emissions, water pollution, and landfill waste.
The funding is distributed among several pioneering institutions.
· Columbia University will receive $11.5 million to develop a high-quality textile fibre grown by bacteria fed on agricultural waste, in partnership with the Fashion Institute of Technology.
· The University of California, Berkeley is awarded $10 million to produce a high-performance biodegradable fibre inspired by spider silk.
· Clemson University receives $11 million to use gene editing to develop new cotton varieties with built-in colour and enhanced resilience.
· The Cotton Foundation will receive $1.5 million to support the restoration of a diverse, publicly accessible non-GMO cotton seedbank.
Lauren Sánchez Bezos, Vice Chair of the Bezos Earth Fund, highlighted the significance of these innovations. “The science happening right now is incredible. These teams are growing fiber from bacteria, engineering cotton that comes out of the ground in color and creating silk like fibers from compost. That’s not just good for the planet. That’s the future of fashion,” she stated.
Tom Taylor, President and CEO of the Bezos Earth Fund, emphasised the urgency of this transition. “We believe sustainable fashion is part of that mission by making sustainable clothing choices easy, widely available, and ultimately better for the planet and for people,” he said.
Jeff Bezos has committed $10 billion in this decisive decade to protect nature and address climate change.
By providing funding and expertise, the organisation partners with others to accelerate innovation, break down barriers to success, and create a more equitable and sustainable world where people prosper in harmony with nature.
