Textile Visionary Derek Crowson - Founder of Crowson Fabrics - Passes Away at 87
December 2025 London - It is with great sadness that The Design Archives announces the passing of Derek Crowson, a truly remarkable figure in the world of textiles and the founder of Crowson Fabrics.
He passed away at the age of 87, leaving behind his wife Dorothy, daughters Sharon and Lorraine, grandchildren, and a great-grandchild.
Derek Crowson was a visionary who established Crowson Fabrics from humble beginnings in 1978, building it into one of the world’s leading producers, designers, and suppliers of home furnishings.
His immense contribution to the industry was recognised with the Queen's Award for Export in both 1994 and 1995.
His entrepreneurial spirit also led him to acquire Monkwell, The Design Archives, Charterhouse, Dovedale, and Hill & Knowles, all of which now form part of his enduring legacy, the Crowson Archive.
In a 2015 interview with Fabrics & Furnishings International, Derek reflected on his career. "I have thoroughly enjoyed creating and leading Crowson Fabrics," he said. "During the 1980s and 1990s, we were producing approximately 10 million metres of fabric annually... supplying over 8,000 independent retailers and most of the major high street stores and furniture manufacturers in the UK and around the world. It gave me much satisfaction and pride that our unique apprenticeship scheme led to the launch of so many careers within the textile industry."
Due to Derek's ill health, the business closed in 2014.
His legacy continues through his daughter, Sharon, who established The Design Archives in its new form in 2016, using the invaluable Crowson Archive as the design source for her fabric and wallpaper collections.
Those who had the privilege of working with Derek will remember not only his extraordinary creative and business talent but also his warmth, generosity, and unmistakable character.
He was also a dedicated philanthropist, supporting numerous charities and community causes throughout his life.
Derek will be greatly missed but always remembered with admiration and affection.
We extend our deepest condolences to his family, friends, and all who were touched by his remarkable life.
