Adapting to the ever-changing digital printing landscape is no easy feat when you have a printing business, staff and clients to service.

It has therefore never before been more important to make access to learning - seamless and accessible.

Over the course of the pandemic the HP team have adapted at warp speed utilising the HP Virtual Booth – a portal to knowledge.

It’s packed with insights alongside product information and links to all of the HP webinars across all the channels that you may have missed for instant replay. From product demonstrations to topical discussions, storytelling and expert interviews or workflow solutions - it’s a great resource.

We caught up on the “Turning Heads – Easy Soft Signage” webinar to discover more about the technology that’s utilised in the production of printed signage (with a splash of décor).

Moderated by Johan Spies, WW Textile product management at HP the webinar followed the workflow of a tear drop flag from design through the production workflow and onto cutting. The webinar hosted by a European cast beamed across Europe in real-time featuring roundtable discussions and informative product demonstrations. As the retail sector begins to unlock, sales are steadily increasing and the stage is set for post pandemic recovery within the signage industry.

Having access to the technicians that utilize software and machinery in this practical learning style is both informative and engaging and provides a window to the technology that must be adopted to increase environmental efficiency and the adoption of print-on-demand. Whilst this webinar was primarily focused on the signage marketplace, many of the processes mirror those for the production of customized products for the Décor industry.

As the industry begins to emerge post pandemic there is so much to catch up on – innovations have continued throughout the last 18 months and without physical access, online learning has proved to be a highly successful medium.

The printer used for this demonstration was the HP Stitch S1000, Johan provided a full and detailed explanation of the sector and its applications, later explaining the machines’ technology, the updates for the 2021 version of the S1000 and its application for wide format printed signage using either DTF or paper transfer printing.

The first guest host was Helder Azevedo, solution specialist at Ergosoft who continued with a live demo of the Ergosoft design and RIP software that’s built into the HP Stitch S1000 as default.

For this demonstration Helder walked the listener through the creation of a tear drop flag, highlighting the key points and options for printed production, whilst also preparing the file for cutting at the end of the process. Ease of use has been built into this efficient Ergosoft software suite and the menu navigation is highly visual and designed with the operator front of mind.

Once the artwork files are prepared and ready for print the digital file is printed onto transfer paper on the S1000 and transferred on the Klieverik heat press.

Once again Johan provided a very detailed explanation of the Dye Sublimation process and the application of Klieverik  calendar, explaining the intrinsic details and why the investment in high quality heat transfer equipment is essential for print quality and colour consistency.

To round off the demonstration the camera switch to Belgium and Randi Kerkaert, Senior product specialist digital finishing, Summa. Giving a highly visual and informative demonstration with lots of expert tips in conversation.  Randi demonstrated the entire cutting process live.

To conclude:

Rounding off with an expert roundtable Q&A session, the panel was joined by Cliff Rick of Klieverik and together the hosts shared their knowledge in discussion whilst answering viewers questions in a live format.

Gathering industry experts together in this style of webinar imparts more than just knowledge, it gives first-hand access to industry practitioners who together amass many years of field production experience from which the audience can harness the benefit for their own businesses.

Much has changed during the cause of the pandemic. We have all had to adapt to a virtual world - there have been many challenges, but with those forced events, unexpected benefits have emerged – a tsunami of virtual knowledge.

The ease with which we can now access information online - has accelerated our learning - forcing many of our industry peers (myself included) to take a space in a virtual spotlight that we may not have previously sought or have been comfortable occupying. All of which has ensured that business has continued, demonstrations have been made and over time we have become ever more familiar with our online presence.

Without doubt we have been gifted unparalleled access to the incredible talent that our industry holds – previously hidden faces and years of experience have emerged into the spotlight to share knowledge and insights.

This style of learning and its virtual delivery will remain a constant long after the pandemic is forgotten, we have become more collaborative and appreciative of our collective skills. The skills that make the print industry unique.
