15 August 2024 Frankfurt – Natural yet high-performing fibers are set to revolutionize multiple industries, offering a pivotal blend of sustainability and performance.
Techtextil 2024 showcased groundbreaking developments in the ‘Nature Performance’ area, and Techtextil 2026 promises to elevate these innovations further.
Bridging Performance and Sustainability
Innovative natural fibers are breaking new ground, demonstrating that sustainability and high functionality can coexist.
These game-changing materials are in high demand across various industries and are projected to expand the natural fiber market to approximately USD 103 million by 2031.
Techtextil 2024 highlighted these advancements, dedicating a special ‘Nature Performance’ area to this future-forward topic.
Sabine Scharrer, Director of Brand Management for Technical Textiles & Textile Processing at Messe Frankfurt, states, "The industry is ready to provide a range of functional textiles on a natural basis. Whether in the automotive or construction industry, the demand for natural materials is increasing rapidly. We are pleased to see that forward-looking solutions are being presented and welcomed by the branches. In April, more than 15 percent of exhibitors were already showing natural fibers and materials. Due to the high demand and ongoing developments, we expect an even larger range of natural performance materials at the next Techtextil.”
Showcasing Innovative Solutions
Several exhibitors showcased pioneering fiber and material exhibits with functional properties, ranging from natural insulating materials to circular polyester fibers:
· Vegeto The Canadian start-up presented degradable thermal insulation made from milkweed, biopolymer fibers from corn starch, and kapok. A jacket with a non-woven inner lining based on milkweed insulation drew significant attention. Vegeto General Manager Ghyslain Bouchard remarked, “People came to our stand and were really amazed that a plant-based insulating material of this quality even exists.”
· Anatolian Colors Anatolian Colors from Turkey presented natural dyes that rival chemical dyes in quality and durability. Founder Sophia Merve Ince noted, “The Nature Performance Area was an excellent platform for us, aligning perfectly with our vision of environmentally friendly and sustainable textile production.” The company plans to return for Techtextil 2026 following the tremendous response.
· OceanSafe Swiss start-up OceanSafe introduced a biodegradable polyester material, holding all the advantages of conventional polyester. CMO Matthias Fuchs commented, “The feedback was amazing,” highlighting the variety of industry visitors, from automotive to public procurement.
· Discover Natural Fibres Initiative (DNFI) The DNFI's central theme at Techtextil was increasing the use of natural fibers in the textile industry. Sandra Bohne, Managing Director of DNFI member ‘Fibral Material Alliance,’ shared, “Many companies that have not yet used natural fibers visited our booth to learn about alternatives to man-made fibers. It was a very successful event with excellent visitor quality.”
Looking Ahead to Techtextil 2026
The innovative companies at Techtextil 2024 have demonstrated that nature and performance are indeed a sustainable match.
With an even greater focus on natural fibers, yarns, and materials, Techtextil 2026 is set to further this momentum, paving the way for future-proof, eco-friendly solutions across multiple industries.
