The ZDHC Foundation remains committed to advancing sustainable chemical management practices. Through our concerted efforts and the cooperation of industry stakeholders, we are making significant strides towards a more sustainable and ethical future
This guide is an integral component of our ongoing commitment to achieving ZDHC's 2030 sustainability goals.
A Holistic Approach to Chemical Management
The Commodity Chemicals Guide V1.0 is designed to support the fashion industry in evaluating and responsibly managing commodity chemicals such as sodium sulfate, ammonia, and bleach. The guide encourages industry practices that protect workers, communities, and the environment, aligning with ZDHC's vision for a sustainable future.
Understanding Commodity Chemicals
At ZDHC, we define commodity chemicals as single substances or chemical compounds with well-known structures and single CAS numbers. These chemicals are used to create conditions or act as process aids. They are often interchangeable and do not remain on the final product, posing a risk to wastewater and sludge quality due to their washing off during processing.
Key Objectives of the Guide
The Commodity Chemicals Guide V1.0 aims to:
Provide a Comprehensive List: Identify commodity chemicals that should be responsibly managed within the ZDHC input chemical management framework.
Classify Chemicals: Differentiate between 'virgin' and 'non-virgin' chemicals for assessing ZDHC MRSL risks.
Best Practices Advisory: Offer guidance on evaluating commodity chemical sellers for ZDHC MRSL risks, storage, handling, and transportation precautions.
Root Cause Analysis: Detail RCA for ZDHC MRSL non-conformities in wastewater test reports as per ZDHC Wastewater Guidelines.
Expectations from Industry Stakeholders
Brands:
Brands are encouraged to share this guide with their supply chains and work to ensure that suppliers embed these best practices within their operations.
Suppliers:
Suppliers should familiarize themselves with the guide and incorporate its recommendations into their purchasing decisions, storage, and handling protocols. This proactive approach will help mitigate risks associated with commodity chemicals.
Moving Forward
ZDHC will collaborate with Signatory Brands to disseminate the guide across supply chains, promoting the adoption of best practices for managing commodity chemicals. Suppliers, in turn, are expected to implement these practices to ensure the safety and sustainability of their operations.
