Hena Begum, a graduate from Portsmouth University’s Fashion and Textiles course won the David Bands Textiles Award at the Graduate Fashion Foundation 2020.
Graduate Fashion Foundation is a charitable organisation and an essential part of the fashion industry. It is the springboard for new talent, the life force the whole industry relies on.
GFF share good practice and knowledge with opportunities for connectivity and benchmarking within the art and design community.
GFF organise events e.g. Graduate Fashion Week, industry-led projects and mentor, to ensure that graduates worldwide are supported to gain meaningful employment upon graduation and to enable them to contribute responsibly to the future of the fashion industry.
Every year, GFF launches awards to inspire students to become innovators, environmental leaders, employees, and educators while promoting cultural diversity and inclusivity within an international platform.
The graduate’s work was recognised for its distinctive and thought-provoking exploration of the creative textile process which she created while at home during the coronavirus pandemic.
Hena said: “To have won the David Bands Textile Award during such a difficult time means so much to me. All my hard work and effort has really paid off but I definitely could not have done it without the support of my family, friends, lecturers and technicians at university. I have proved to myself that when I put my mind towards a goal I can achieve many things, which is an important lesson I will take away from this experience.”
The awards ceremony was Live streamed at Samsung Kx in London and judging was completed in June via Zoom by a socially distanced judging panel.
