Bournemouth, UK – July 2024– Arts University Bournemouth announces the graduation of Isabella Gorman, an exceptional womenswear fashion designer whose dynamic silhouettes and versatile designs are set to make waves in the fashion industry.
Isabella Gorman is a womenswear designer with a distinctive ethos—to infuse fun into fashion.
Her designs are characterized by playful proportions and bold, energetic fabrics that celebrate life.
Each piece she creates aims to elevate everyday wear, offering versatility to be dressed up or down, reflecting the wearer's emotions.
A Designer with a Broad Skill Set
Gorman excels in transforming her designs from 2D sketches to 3D masterpieces, showcasing her talents in creative pattern cutting, construction, and sewing.
Her comprehensive skill set spans innovative draping techniques to technically accurate tailoring.
Her artistic background informs her experimental approach to fabric sourcing, abstract illustrations, and tactile textile innovations.
A Collection Inspired by Family History
"My initial inspiration stemmed from my family's history and their battles, crossing boundaries," says Gorman. Her grandfather's harrowing escape from Germany to England in a potato sack at the age of four, following WWII, serves as a poignant source of inspiration. Despite facing abuse and hostility for his foreign origins, he displayed remarkable resilience and strength, traits he passed on to his daughters.
Gorman's collection reflects this legacy of strength and love.
She reinterprets the silhouette of lederhosen, experimenting with gathering and scale, turning a traditional garment into a symbol of evolving from suffering to strength.
Her designs incorporate vibrant colors and bold fabrics, contrasting with monochrome family archive photos, symbolizing the love and support she received from her family.
Fabrications, Textiles, and Textures
The selection of fabrics for her collection is pivotal in telling her story.
A black and white cow print blanket, dubbed the "Blanket of Love," inspires the monochrome fabrics and textured upholstery fabric.
This contrasts with a bold, bright, and free print using alcohol ink, inspired by the symbolism of boundaries from the lava lamp.
Additionally, the contrast rib knit mimics tweed fabrications from her family archives, creating a cohesive and visually engaging collection.
