Meet Emily Clarke─Winner Of The Sports & Denim Prize At The ARTSTHREAD Global Design Graduate Show 2022
I'm a First Class BA Fashion graduate from Kingston University specialising in menswear design, with a particular focus on sportswear and outerwear.
Throughout my graduate collection the layering of technical and delicate effeminate fabrics combined with sportswear elements and oversized silhouettes have been key in creating a sporty menswear collection with a subtle feminine twist.
The initial inspiration for my graduate collection was taken from the works of photographer Camila Falquez and her series ‘Sand Figures’ which documents the wrestlers of Senegal, fighting on the soft sandy beaches and pink lakes to win the title King of the Arena.
Her images capture a brutal, intense sport in a very delicate and intimate manner, obscuring how the sport is presented and therefore interpreted.
The collection King of the Arena has been designed and developed to play on the boundaries of aggression within fighting culture and the idea of protection and vulnerability, linking directly to boxing and wrestling and more indirectly to the exploration of the topic of masculinity.
Studying the movements of boxers to reveal areas of the body which are most vulnerable.
Translating this into clothing using cut out panels and fabrics of the opposing qualities to provide protection or exposure.
