The Green Grads September Brief
Create a surface print textile collection for fashion and/or furnishings that tells an “eco story” through design, by raising awareness of environmental issues, using appropriate materials and technology. There are two examples at the end of this briefing.
We are looking for a carefully-considered presentation of varying imagery, scales and colourways.
Your imagery/motifs can highlight and draw attention to any aspect of the environmental challenges that we now face as a direct result of climate change, industrialisation, over-production, waste, vanishing species and more.
Some ideas to get you started, and some of the pressing issues you could highlight in your designs (though you will have your own creative input).
· beauty of the natural world, now under threat, re-wilding
· beauty of natural materials: bamboo, jute, silk, sheepskin, cork and more
· biodiversity and the danger of vanishing species
· causes and/or effects of climate change and rising sea levels
· problem of polluted seas and marine plastics
· melting of ice caps – endangered coral reefs
· wind farms or solar power – electric transport
· need to reduce waste – challenge of recycling
Or you could be inspired by an environmental success story.
Your collection can be designed for a particular age group, but make this clear in your submission, and explain why and how you’ve done this.
You should also suggest sustainable ways to produce your designs. You could consider production techniques, base cloths, material innovation, circularity and waste, distribution and total carbon generated. Feel free to add weaves, embroidery, appliqué and so on, and/or use charity shop finds/upcycled fabrics.
