Cambridge, UK, 13 March 2025: Conference and course provider IMI Europe Ltd announces lineup of technical courses for its Inkjet Summer School event, to be held in Cambridge, UK from 21-25 July 2025.

IMI Europe’s Inkjet Summer School event returns to Cambridge, the ‘home of inkjet’, for 2025, with six courses allowing developers to get an in-depth look at key technology areas.

The line-up for 2025 includes the well-known Inkjet Academy along with courses on printhead modelling, functional material printing, inkjet drop behaviour, ink manufacturing and a new course covering surface treatment.

The event is located at The Møller Institute, Churchill College and includes evening drinks receptions as well as a punt trip along the river Cam. Course summaries are as follows:

Inkjet Academy

The theory of inkjet technology

Mon 21 - Tue 22 July 2025

Presented by Dr Mark Bale of DoDxAct and Dr Tim Phillips of Catenary Solutions/IMI Europe, the course introduces the basics of inkjet technology.

Fluid Dynamics & Acoustics

How inkjet printing really works

Mon 21 - Tue 22 July 2025

This course uses the theory of fluid acoustics to understand the characteristics of droplet formation and subsequent behaviour. The course leader is Prof Emeritus Dr Frits Dijksman, University of Twente, Netherlands.

Inkjet Ink Manufacturing

Manufacturing inks for performance and reliability

Wed 23 – Thu 24 July 2025

This course covers inkjet ink design for manufacture, testing and reliability, scale-up for manufacture and manufacturing itself. It also covers ink plant design, required equipment, quality control and commercial considerations. Course leaders are Dr Chris Nicholas of Smart Chemistry and Dr Tim Phillips of IMI Europe/Catenary Solutions.

Surface Treatment for Inkjet Printing

Plasma & corona treatment to optimise print quality and durability

Wed 23 – Thu 24 July 2025

This new course for 2025 looks at the surface pre-treatment processes, including plasma and corona treatment, used to prepare the substrate for inkjet printing, leading to enhanced adhesion, print quality and durability. The course is led by Peter van Steenacker from Tigres and Kevin McKell from Vetaphone.

Jetting Functional Fluids

Rheology, deposition, process & development

Thu 24 – Fri 25 July 2025

The Jetting Functional Fluids course looks at the development of functional printing applications, including inkjet printhead selection, formulating an ink with functional materials and jetting functional fluids onto a substrate. The course is led by Dr Neil Chilton and Dr Clare Conboy of Printed Electronics Ltd.

Inkjet Drop Behaviour

How ink behaves on, in and above surfaces during inkjet printing

Thu 24 – Fri 25 July 2025

This course covers the link between fluid bulk & dynamic properties on jetting, waveform & fluid interaction during drop ejection, drop break-up & aerodynamics, before looking at drop-substrate interactions including during drying and curing. The course is led by experts from the University of Cambridge, TriJet and Advanced Inkjet Solutions.

“IMI Europe’s Inkjet Summer School is the ideal place to learn more about inkjet technology in a relaxed environment,” comments Dr Tim Phillips, Managing Director IMI Europe. “We have a great venue in Cambridge, the home of inkjet technology, and six excellent courses from industry experts. In addition to learning from the course providers, the Inkjet Summer School also gives excellent opportunities to exchange information with the other attendees during lunches, evening receptions and a punt trip on the river Cam.”
