November 2018 Priya Ahluwalia, who graduated from the MA Menswear course at Westminster in June, has been named as one of the ten shortlisted finalists in H&M’s global design competition.

The H&M Design Award is an annual design prize for graduating students. The prize, which underlines H&M’s commitment to the future of fashion, was established in 2012 to support young designers’ as they begin their careers in fashion.

The winner will be awarded a prize of €25,000 as well as a six months long paid internship at H&M’s Head Office in Stockholm which will include a monthly salary, accommodation and other benefits. All finalists, including the winner, will also be awarded €5,000 for making it to the final.

Priya Ahluwalia's collection was first shown at London Fashion Week Men’s in June 2018 as part of the MA Menswear graduate show. Her collection is inspired by the lifecycle of second-hand garments. The research took Priya to both West Africa and Panipat, India – the second-hand clothing recycling capital of the world. All fabrics for her collection have been created from patchworked second-hand clothes. Bold colours and varying textures feature throughout her exciting and multi-layered pieces. Beading was developed in India with the organisation ‘Sewa Delhi’ which specialises in fair trade and positive employment for rural women.

The final will take place on Wednesday 28 November in Berlin where the finalists will present their collections in front of an international jury of fashion experts, who will select the winner of this year’s award.

MA Menswear Course Leader Liliana Ramirez said: “Congratulations to one of our first MA Menswear graduates, Priya, who is a finalist for this important award. Priya’s collection represented a widely chosen, thorough research and paid heed to her interest in sustainability issues. It’s a well-deserved indicator of the success which awaits Priya in the future.
