June 2024 – Global workwear textile manufacturer Carrington Textiles has made a significant leap towards sustainability by achieving a 45% reduction in carbon emissions at its Portuguese site.
This milestone follows the installation of a state-of-the-art biomass boiler in 2023, demonstrating the company's commitment to environmental stewardship and energy efficiency.
Carrington Textiles' joint venture in Portugal, MGC, has successfully reduced natural gas consumption by 70% and now produces 95% of the steam needed for operations through the newly installed biomass boiler. This advancement marks a substantial step towards adopting more sustainable textile production practices.
A biomass boiler operates by utilizing organic materials such as wood chips, agricultural residues, and other biological matter to generate heat and energy. This innovative technology serves as an eco-friendly alternative to fossil fuels, significantly cutting down on greenhouse gas emissions.
MGC’s biomass boiler is fueled by responsibly sourced wood chips from local forests within a 50 km radius of the factory. These wood chips are certified by SURE (Sustainable Resources) and consist of leftover wood from the paper industry that needs to be removed to prevent forest fires. The ash generated during this process is treated and repurposed as soil fertilizer, ensuring no soil contamination.
Carbon Neutral Achievements
This new equipment has enabled the textile manufacturer to decrease its overall CO2 emissions by 45% compared to 2022. Commenting on this achievement, Jose Melo, MGC’s Managing Director, said, “The installation of the biomass boiler marks a significant milestone in our journey towards driving energy efficiency in our manufacturing processes. The substantial reduction in our CO2 emissions is a testament to our commitment to environmental stewardship.”
Comprehensive Environmental Initiatives
In addition to the biomass boiler, MGC has implemented several initiatives to further demonstrate its commitment to sustainability. These efforts include:
Reducing water consumption by over 13%
Minimizing waste and plastic usage
Providing environmental management training to all employees
Implementing advanced energy management systems
Introducing wastewater treatment systems to remove microplastics and PFAs
These initiatives, along with the biomass boiler installation, highlight Carrington Textiles and MGC's dedication to investing in technologies that reduce their environmental impact.
