Heimtextil Trends 27/28 Explores The Tension Between Performance And Respite In The Modern Home

Frankfurt am Main, 7 September 2026 – Heimtextil has unveiled its Trends 27/28 forecast, titled 'Home-Maxxing – The Performance of Everyday Living', developed in collaboration with Milan-based design platform Alcova.

The forecast examines how efficiency-driven thinking and technology are reshaping the design of interior spaces and textiles across residential, hospitality, workplace and healthcare environments.

The concept of 'Home-Maxxing' captures a defining tension of the moment: as sleep, wellness, routines and materials become increasingly optimised, the demand grows for homes that offer genuine respite rather than further pressure to perform.

Textiles are at the centre of this shift — regulating light, absorbing sound and filtering air, while simultaneously responding to a need for materials that are pleasant to the touch, durable and free from added complexity.

Olaf Schmidt, Vice President Textiles & Textile Technologies at Messe Frankfurt, said: "Home-Maxxing captures two opposing expectations of our time: the drive for ever greater performance and the need for respite. Heimtextil Trends 27/28 broaden the perspective on textile performance: it is not only about what materials and products can do, but also about how their function can be understood and their material qualities experienced. This opens up new avenues for the design and development of future products and spatial concepts."

The Forecast Is Structured Around Three Distinct Trend Directions.

·       The first, Staged Competence, presents an aesthetic in which technical expertise is deliberately foregrounded. Technical codes, symbols and micrographics become design elements in their own right, with cool blues, mineral shades and acid yellow reinforcing the performance-driven character.

·       The second direction, Inside, Out, responds to growing complexity in technology and digital systems by making structures legible and connections visible. Fastenings, seams, zips and screws are no longer concealed but embraced as design features, complemented by a palette of deep charcoals, saturated red and cool green-grey.

·       The third direction, Hyper Presence, offers a deliberate counterpoint. Prioritising what cannot be measured — texture, scent, the ageing of materials — it draws on natural fibres, beeswax-treated fabrics and richly tactile surfaces. Warm earthy tones including deep rust, ochre and dusty pink anchor the palette.

Together, the three directions reflect a broader renegotiation of what performance means in interior design — one that balances measurable functionality with the lived, sensory experience of space.
