Route 1 Print Scales Large-Format Finishing With PLASTgrommet Automation

February 2026  – Route 1 Print, the UK's largest trade printer, has significantly enhanced its large-format production capacity by implementing an integrated finishing automation solution from PLASTGrommet.

The investment addresses a critical bottleneck in the production workflow and brings previously outsourced finishing operations in-house, enabling the company to meet growing demand for outdoor banners and signage while maintaining quality and turnaround standards.

Operating from a 300,000 square foot facility with over 350 staff, Route 1 Print dispatches more than 10,000 jobs weekly to print resellers across the country.

Large-format print accounts for approximately 15-20% of total output, translating to 1,500-2,000 jobs each week spanning posters, signage, roller banners, outdoor banners and exhibition stands.

Sustained growth in outdoor large-format applications, particularly among smaller businesses seeking cost-effective display solutions, prompted the company to reassess its finishing capabilities.

The phased implementation began in September 2024 with the Evolve Air Welder and two eyelet presses for clear eyelets, followed by the Finishing Station in May 2025.

The most recent addition, installed in November 2025, was the Hybrid TexWiz integrated banner finishing platform, which consolidates automated cutting, eyeletting, banner welding and fabric sewing within a single system.

PLASTGrommet, a manufacturer specialising in banner and textile finishing automation since 1990, designed the solution to streamline operations that are typically time-consuming and physically demanding.

The clear eyelet technology offers both operational and sustainability advantages, allowing banners printed on PP and PE materials to remain within the same waste stream while delivering a premium, rust-free finish.

Installation and training were delivered by PLASTGrommet's UK distributor Atech, with operators fully competent on the TexWiz system within days.

The automation investment has positioned Route 1 Print to nearly triple its large-format finishing capacity, supporting both current production volumes and future growth in the sector.
