FESPA Launches Anti-Greenwashing Sustainability Guide to Support Environmentally Responsible Operations

Dorking – Surrey- March 26th 2026 – FESPA has announced the launch of its new Anti-Greenwashing Sustainability Guide, titled ‘Understanding and Avoiding Greenwash’.

Designed specifically for the print and visual communications sectors, the guide provides essential support for businesses navigating an increasingly complex regulatory landscape across the UK and the EU, ensuring their environmental messaging remains accurate, credible, and fully evidenced.

As sustainability becomes a critical purchasing criterion, regulatory bodies are tightening legislation to prevent unsubstantiated environmental claims.

Research cited in the new guide reveals a pressing industry-wide issue, showing that over 53 percent of environmental claims are vague, misleading, or unfounded, while 40 percent lack supporting evidence altogether.

The printing industry faces distinct risks when using terms such as biodegradable, compostable, and eco-friendly without proper validation.

The comprehensive guide addresses these challenges by outlining key principles underpinning current and upcoming environmental legislation.

It warns that even technically true claims can be classified as greenwashing if they omit relevant information or fail to reflect a product's full lifecycle impact.

FESPA urges organisations to adopt a lifecycle and systems-thinking approach, examining environmental impacts from raw material sourcing through to end-of-life disposal.

A major focus of the publication is supply chain transparency.

With incoming regulatory shifts, such as the EU Directive on Empowering Consumers for the Green Transition set for full implementation by 2026, businesses will face significantly stricter requirements.

FESPA’s guide equips companies with actionable advice on using recognised certifications, improving internal processes, and ensuring robust documentation from suppliers to support any environmental claims made about products or services.

By providing this practical guidance, FESPA aims to help the industry move confidently beyond generic statements.

The initiative protects corporate reputations and fosters a more transparent, trustworthy, and environmentally responsible future for the entire print value chain.
