Elise Sze To is a London based textile designer, specialising mixing different textiles including knit, crochet, weave, and tufting.

Elise started as a stylist and photographer who studied Fashion Styling and Photography at the Hong Kong Design Institute, graduating in 2017.

Originally from Hong Kong, Elise moved to London in 2018 to complete her degree in Fashion Textile Knit in the London College of Fashion to pursue her dream of becoming a textile designer.

Her works explores traditional crafts and mixed textures to produce thought-provoking textile collections.

RUIRUI DENG’s new AW 2022 capsule collection continues the journey of Alien Mermaids through her garments.

This collection is centred around the story of two extraterrestrial Mermaids and their voyages from outside universes to our Earth.

In search of a more suitable home, these mermaids are guided through London by a property agent who brings them to a large mansion that is filled with the antiques and sculptures alongside other mermaids from different galaxies and universes, each of whom is familiarising themselves with various elements of their new life in a new world.

RUIRUI DENg is a London fashion brand delivering futuristic cultural inspiration with a refined design.

RUIRUI DENG was conceived as a future-oriented fashion brand, born to express the founder’s intrigue of alien mermaids inhabiting the earth, exploring and understanding the human world.

I was fortunate to be invited to design a range of knitwear for the RUIRUI DENG 2022 autumn and winter collection.

I combined the brand’s element with some of the textile ideas in my previous project which was inspired by nature, stone, and the fragmented texture of lava.

I found RUIRUI DENG’s logo to be interesting, composed of an absurd mermaid image with the brand’s design of every collection revealing the findings of alien mermaids following their visit to earth.

I tried to knit the logo with different techniques and colours such as punch cards and e-wrap.

As the final design will be produced and sold in the market, I did a lot of testing with the logo and ensured that the details were perfect before production.

In this collaboration, I incorporated some earth elements, such as the broken knit texture inspired by the texture of rough stone, the combination of flowing lava, and the brand logo.

I chose to use 100% natural fibres and mainly wool which is 100% biodegradable and breathable, which is compatible with the nature element in this project.

In the garment design, I designed 3 dresses and a broken vest which is mainly the brand logo combined with my textiles, inspired by nature.

The silhouettes of 3 dresses were inspired by the construction of women's underwear, with unique strap details.

Furthermore, the vest is designed as an irregular sleeve opening with broken textures.

In the lower right corner, there is a detailed logo of RUIRUI DENG.
