Gucci was awarded the prestigious Ellen MacArthur Foundation Award for Circular Economy at the 2023 edition of CNMI Sustainable Fashion Awards held on September 24th at Teatro alla Scala in Milan.
The honour was bestowed on Gucci for its commitment to embed circular economy principles across its entire value chain, with the objective to design out waste and pollution while enhancing durability, reuse, recycling and second life.
The award follows on from last year’s CNMI Climate Change Award, which recognized Gucci’s efforts to champion regenerative agriculture.
The House took home this year’s award for its ‘Denim Project’, an initiative promoting scalable collaboration and circularity every step of the way.
During the ceremony, Sinéad Burke presented the award to Gucci’s CEO, Jean-François Palus, who highlighted the importance of collaboration and reaffirmed the House’s ongoing commitment to combine a heritage of timeless luxury and craftsmanship with its vision of a modern, responsible and circular luxury for the future.
“Building scalable collaborations is a vital part of Gucci’s strategy and the ‘Denim project’ is an example of combining the many strengths of the House’s supply chain partners and leveraging innovative tech to enhance circular economy principles.” Jean-François Palus, Gucci’s CEO
The first products developed under the Denim Project will be available in 2024 and will also include a digital product passport tracing the journey from raw materials to manufacturing and production, as well as providing information about product care and repair services to Gucci clients.
About The Ellen Macarthur Foundation
We’re a charity committed to creating a circular economy, which is designed to eliminate waste and pollution, circulate products and materials (at their highest value), and regenerate nature.
It’s an economic system that delivers better outcomes for people, and the environment.
We are a non-profit organisation that creates evidence-based original research on the benefits of a circular economy and how it can contribute to solving global challenges like climate change and biodiversity loss.
As an NGO, we explore the opportunities across stakeholders and sectors, and highlight examples of how circular economy principles are being put into practice today.
We support organisations and individuals with formal learning opportunities through our circular economy courses, and create resources for teachers and academics.
