Canon Recognised As A "Leader" For The Second Time In IDC Marketscape Sustainability Assessment

London, UK – 15 October 2026 – Canon today announced that it has been named a "Leader" in the IDC MarketScape: Worldwide Sustainability Programs and Services Hardcopy 2026 Vendor Assessment (doc #US54139426, June 2026).

This marks the second time Canon has achieved this recognition, following its first appearance as a Leader in the 2023 assessment.

The IDC MarketScape study evaluated 11 printer and copier vendors worldwide, assessing their sustainability capabilities and strategic direction.

The report highlights Canon's comprehensive approach, stating that the company "is well suited for organisations seeking a vendor with a holistic, technology-driven approach to sustainability, including advanced recycling, remanufacturing, and digital optimisation."

It further notes that "enterprises and SMBs aiming to advance their sustainability objectives through innovative solutions should consider Canon."

This recognition reflects Canon's long-standing commitment to reducing its environmental impact across the full product lifecycle.

The company is actively working to cut CO2 emissions and waste, and to increase its use of recycled materials, with initiatives spanning raw material procurement, manufacturing, distribution, product use, maintenance, and end-of-life recycling.

Central to this strategy is Canon's remanufacturing programme, which uses proprietary processes and technologies developed at plants in Japan and Germany to restore multifunction printers to like-new condition.

At least 90% of the components in these remanufactured units come from used products, yet their quality and performance match those of newly manufactured devices.

In April 2026, Canon expanded its remanufacturing operations to the United States, extending a programme it has continued to scale globally.

Canon's commitment to the circular economy also extends to its toner cartridge recycling programme, which has been running since 1990.

The programme collects used cartridges across 24 countries, with recovered plastic processed at facilities in China, France, Japan, and the United States.

This reclaimed material is refined to a quality standard comparable to virgin plastic and reintroduced into the production of new toner cartridges, closing the loop on waste.

Canon's sustainability ambitions are underpinned by measurable, long-term targets. In 2008, the company set out to reduce average lifecycle CO2 emissions per product by 3% annually.

As of 2025, Canon had exceeded this goal, achieving an average annual reduction of 3.59%, amounting to a cumulative reduction of 45.5%.

Building on this progress, Canon has set its sights on an even more ambitious milestone: achieving net-zero CO2 emissions across product lifecycles by 2050.

As industries worldwide face mounting pressure to operate more sustainably, Canon's recognition as a two-time Leader in this space underscores its role not just as a technology provider, but as a driving force in reshaping how the print industry approaches environmental responsibility.
