Seasalt Cornwall Marks 20 Years As The First Fashion Brand GOTS-Certified By The Soil Association

Falmouth, UK – October 2026 – Seasalt Cornwall today celebrates two decades since becoming the first fashion company to achieve Soil Association certification to the Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS), a milestone that has shaped the company's approach to sourcing, design and production ever since.

The certification, first achieved in 2005, came at a time when the Soil Association was known predominantly for its work with organic vegetables.

Seasalt's founders, the Chadwicks, travelled to Türkiye to build relationships with organic farms, mills and factories, laying the groundwork for a long-term commitment to organic standards, worker wellbeing and traceability.

Working alongside the Soil Association, Seasalt helped shape the framework that brought GOTS certification to the fashion industry.

Seasalt has maintained its GOTS certification every year since, even as the standard has grown more rigorous.

The company now holds thousands of individual transaction certificates for its certified fibres and materials, managed by a dedicated product provenance team that oversees compliance across its supply chain, from yarn spinners to dye houses.

In 2020, Seasalt set a target to convert 100% of the cotton fibre entering its business to certified organic and traceable sources.

While not every product yet carries the GOTS logo, due to the complexity of global supply chains and GOTS' requirement that products be over 70% certified organic fibre, every fibre Seasalt uses comes with full traceability.

This data is cross-referenced with the company's Responsible Cotton Sourcing Policy to ensure no fibres originate from regions with known human rights concerns, including Xinjiang in China.

Building on its GOTS foundation, Seasalt has also committed to a number of other certification schemes, including the Responsible Wool Standard for 100% of its virgin wool, closed-loop viscose from responsibly managed plant sources, and the Leather Working Group standard for all leather, sourced exclusively from gold- and silver-rated tanneries.

In 2025, the company formalised its approach to verification with the launch of a new Green Claims Policy, which sets out exactly how terms such as "organic," "responsible wool" and "recycled" are defined and validated across its product range.

Lucy Panniers, Director of Technical & Product Compliance/Ethics at Seasalt Cornwall, said: "It's been 20 years since we began working with GOTS and our commitment has never wavered. We've always believed in doing the right thing quietly – because it's the right thing, not a marketing move. We're incredibly proud of how far we've come and we think it's time to be louder about it to help raise standards across the fashion industry."

As one of the few UK brands with two decades of GOTS experience, Seasalt says it is committed to supporting others in the industry on a similar journey, including mentoring smaller brands through its membership of the Ethical Trading Initiative and collaborating with other companies working towards GOTS certification.
