Join this Textile Print Design course and learn how to transform your own drawn or found images into a motif and design for print. You will learn a variety of textile printing techniques and how to source fabrics and print materials. 

We'll demonstrate a mix of techniques including dyeing of silk and cotton and screen printing onto a variety of different fabrics.

You'll have the opportunity to experiment with a range of printing techniques including pigment binders, metallics, flock & foil using the heat transfer press, and specialist printing of silk using acid dyes.

Please bring items that inspire you and you would like to draw – these will form the basis of your designs.

Topics Covered

  • Printing and dyeing processes

  • Printing techniques – opaque, metallic, flock, foil, transfer, acid dyes.

  • Sourcing fabrics and print materials

  • Fabric classification

  • Papercut print onto cotton fabric.

  • Pinning, colour mixing, printing.

  • Design and create artwork for photographic screen exposure, using a combination of drawing: painting, cutting, mono-printing,

  • photocopies or collage.

  • Process screens and print a strike off in pigments.

  • Experiment with overprinting and manipulation

  • Dyeing - Direct 

  • Mixing acid dyes for printing onto silk 

  • Transfer press: using transfer paper and inks, and stencils to make patterns

  • Flock and foil

Course Outcomes
You'll leave with a range of printed samples of your dye and print experiments and at least one piece of work you have designed and printed yourself, for example scarves, cushion covers or T-shirts. You'll also know how to take the next steps, namely how and where you can continue textile print designing.
